Who will win Stage 11?
It would seem our Predictomator is broken… these early mountain stages are tough, and not just on the riders!
Thomas de Gendt missed the big break yesterday, and wouldn’t have got over Alaphillipe anyway, so as we lick our wounds, let’s look at today: 108km of Alpine Bliss. For us on the couch, anyway – for the riders, it as an HC climb from the start, and then another one, and then a Cat2, followed by a Cat 1 mountain-top finish… this is a day the sprinters, and the rolling wounded, will be dreading.
It is also a day the GC riders will be relishing, and should give us a proper picture of who is where after yesterday’s damp squib.
Will a GC rider win the stage, though? Geraint Thomas sealed the deal here for his Dauphine GC win last month, but was diddled by Pello Bilbao for the actual stage win, so we are putting our eggs in the Dan Martin basket – the favourites will ‘let him go’ in the final kilometre or so, while they focus on each other… for a second famous win. On any other day, Valverde would join him, but he will have broken himself (hopefully) to set up the Quintana attack that Froome and co will sniff a few km out.
Dan Martin, help us get back on track here, pretty please!
