Who will win Stage 10?
Finally, we hit the mountains in the 2018 Tour de France. The sprinters get to ‘relax’ in the grupetto for a few days, but for the featherweights, the time has come to strut their stuff. For the GC riders, the next three days will be brutal, as they sort out a pecking order for the rest of the Tour. We don’t think the big shake-down will happen today – the finish is a good 15km of fine descending from the top of the Colombiere, but it is not technical enough fro a super-descender like Nibali to want to try his luck. So, we should have some parries, but no real blows landed on the monstrous Plateau des Glières, just short of the halfway mark for the day, but a regrouping among the GC riders for the finale. We will get a good feel for who is strong, and who is not, but no time gaps within the actual favourites group (the guys who really are struggling will have a hard day, though).
Who will win? This is the day the King of the Mountains hopefuls need to get on their bikes, so to speak. The early break will have plenty of freedom (nobody within shouting distance of Yellow will infiltrate it, surely, for very long), and none of the GC teams will allow their mountain men into it, as they will be wanting reinforcements for the gravel road finish to the Glières, just in case there are mechanical difficulties for the team leaders.
We are fairly certain the break will contain one Thomas de Gendt. Our man for the day’s win, and quite possibly the Polka Dot Jersey, too.
